La storia della folle corsa agli armamenti

La lancetta dell’«Orologio dell’Apocalisse» – il segnatempo simbolico che sul Bollettino degli Scienziati Atomici statunitensi indica a quanti minuti siamo dalla mezzanotte della guerra nucleare – è stata spostata in avanti: da 3 a mezzanotte nel 2015 a 2,5 minuti a mezzanotte nel 2017. Un livello di allarme più alto di quello della metà degli anni Ottanta, al culmine della tensione tra Usa e Urss.
Di fronte a questo fatto ci si aspetterebbe una allarmata reazione negli ambienti scientifici e culturali, nelle sedi politiche e parlamentari e, in generale, nell’opinione pubblica. Non è invece così. La notizia che la lancetta dell’Orologio dell’Apocalisse si sta avvicinando alla mezzanotte nucleare passa inosservata o, comunque, non suscita particolari allarmi.
Sembra di vivere nel film 'The Day After' (1983), in quella cittadina del Kansas dove la vita scorre tranquilla accanto ai silos dei missili nucleari statunitensi, con la gente che il giorno prima ascolta distrattamente le notizie sul precipitare della situazione internazionale, finché vede i missili balistici intercontinentali lanciati dai silos contro l’Urss e poco dopo spuntare i funghi atomici delle testate nucleari sovietiche.
Il libro, che ricostruisce la storia della corsa agli armamenti nucleari dal 1945 ad oggi sullo sfondo dei cambiamenti dello scenario internazionale, contribuisce a colmare il vuoto di informazione creato ad arte su questo tema di vitale importanza. Con la fine della guerra fredda, si è diffusa la sensazione che una guerra nucleare sia ormai inconcepibile e si è creata di conseguenza la pericolosa illusione che si possa convivere con la Bomba. Ossia con una potenza distruttiva che può cancellare la specie umana e quasi ogni altra forma di vita. Lo possiamo evitare, mobilitandoci per eliminare le armi nucleari dalla faccia della Terra. Finché siamo in tempo, il giorno prima.
